Assessments

Child

For children and youth, the assessment consists of 3 sessions. The initial 60 minute assessment session is held with parents to provide a comprehensive psychosocial history. Next a 45 minute individual session is held with the child or youth. Depending on the age of the young person, he/she either engages in age-appropriate play activities or simply talks with Terry to convey assessment information from their perspective.

Additional assessment information may be obtained from collateral sources such as teachers, daycare providers, coaches, or pediatricians. Contact with collateral sources only occurs if parents have provided consent.

The third session of assessment is usually a 45 minute family session, in which the family members convey the family dynamic perspective. In this third session, the family also works together with Terry to develop a comprehensive solution focused treatment plan that the family agrees upon.

Adult

For adults, the assessment consists of one 60 minute evaluation session and any collateral contacts the client authorizes for additional assessment information. Together the client and Terry will determine specific attainable goals and a treatment plan that builds on identified strengths. The mutually agreed upon treatment plan is created by the end of the first session.

Psychotherapy

Child

For children, follow up therapy sessions include individual sessions with the child, collateral sessions with parents, and family sessions as needed. Follow up psychotherapy sessions are 45 minutes in length. Parents hold “privilege” with regards to their children. This requires that parents be appraised of the progress the child is making during individual therapy sessions. Terry strives to keep confidential the details of what is revealed in therapy sessions with children as this allows for the creation of trust and an environment more condusive to sharing. There do exist certain limits to this confidentiality which Terry will discuss at the initial session with each family member involved in treatment.

Adult

For adults, follow up psychotherapy sessions are primarily held with the identified client, however whenever appropriate, and with client permission, others such as a spouse or family member may attend a session as needed to achieve a specified goal. Follow up psychotherapy sessions are 45 minutes in length.
